Atrapsalta collina
Granite Squeaker

Conservation status: Least Concern

Atrapsalta collina is actually a group of very similar cicadas. It includes the Granite Squeaker, Sandstone Squeaker and Bolivia Hill Squeaker.

Scientific Classification
Order:
Family:
Genus:
Species:
Hemiptera
Cicadidae
Atrapsalta
collina

All three Squeakers are very similar in appearance, but their calls are different. The Granite Squeaker is only found in a small area of southern Queensland and into far northern New South Wales.

The cicada in the above photos had flown onto the back of the photographer's hand. It sat there happily for some minutes before flying away.

For more information about this cicada and to hear its song, please go to Dr Lindsay Popple's website: A web guide to The cicadas of Australia – Sandstone Squeaker (species complex) - Atrapsalta collina
