Fred Williams, Girraween's first official camper, stayed during the construction of the first toilet block in August 1966.
When the facilities first opened for Christmas 1966, visitors were encouraged to camp in the present day Bald Rock Creek day-use area.
As the number of day users and campers continued to increase, this area became very busy. Over Easter 1969, the current Bald Rock Creek day-use area accommodated 704 campers and over 100 day visitors!
The opening of the separate Bald Rock Creek camping area in 1971 (complete with its own toilets and showers) helped alleviate the overcrowding problems. However, during Easter 1973, Girraween National Park experienced a record 930 campers - with campers filling both the Bald Rock Creek day-use-area and the Bald Rock Creek camping area.
After this hectic weekend, a limit of 500 campers was put in place and plans were made to create another camping area to provide for sustainable use.
The amenities block in the Bald Rock Creek camping area was renovated in 1976.
Castle Rock camping area was constructed in 1977.
Girraween rangers now limit camper numbers to 350 people per night.
