Both male and female adults are similarly coloured, being mostly a metallic greenish-black with pale markings on the thorax and pale stripes on the abdomen. The wingspan can be up to 70 mm.
The two subspecies can be recognised by the colour of their mouth. Austroargiolestes i. icteromelas' mouth is a pale, yellowish-white and Austroargiolestes i. nigrolabiatus' mouth is dark brown or black.
As its common name of "Flatwing" suggests, this damselfly usually rests with its wings outspread like a dragonfly.
