Ischnura aurora
Aurora Bluetail

Conservation status: Least Concern


Aurora Bluetails can be found in every state of Australia, as well as in India and across the central Pacific. There are three described subspecies: Ischnura aurora aurora, Ischnura aurora rubilio, Ischnura aurora viduata. The Australian Aurora Bluetails are Ischnura aurora aurora.

Male and female adults are coloured differently. Males have a distinctive red abdomen with a black and blue tip, while females' abdomens are green with a dark stripe along the length of the top. The wingspan can be up to 30 mm.

They are weak fliers and perch frequently. Aurora Bluetails can be found near sluggish or still waters.
