This fly is a male.

Trichophthalma costalis

Conservation status: Least Concern

The males of Trichophthalma costalis hover among trees and in glades, often only 1 to 3 metres from the ground. Males take up territories and defend them against intruders. They sometimes gather under one particular tree in a set of small territories and their hum is quite distinct. This species is quite common in Girraween.
