Singular – tafone.
Acidic rainwater runs off the sides of large boulders or slabs and collects at their sheltered bases. Over time, small, smooth saucer-shaped depressions are dissolved into the lower portion of the rock. As the depressions deepen into holes, a protective rim is left around them, so that a collection of tafoni looks like honeycomb. An example of some tafoni can be seen at the base of the cliff near Balancing Rock on top of The Pyramid.
