The first known European people to embrace the pristine waterways of the Girraween area were the workers from Paddy Ryan's sawmill. During the 1920s, they made use of the present day Dr Roberts' Waterhole for swimming, picnicking and fossicking. They even built a diving board for the swimming hole!
The park owes its initial creation to the vision and persistence of Dr Spencer Roberts - a medical practitioner from Stanthorpe. Dr Roberts was deeply concerned about the long-term survival of local wildlife.

1966 was a momentous year! The land in between Bald Rock Creek National Park and Castle Rock National Park was acquired from Napier Gunn, thus joining the two parks together. As yet unnamed - Girraween National Park was born.
